America’s Final War

By Sean Osborne, Associate Director, Military Affairs

3 April 2008: All of the wars and battles that America has fought since the April 19, 1775 engagement at Lexington and Concord through to Operation Desert Storm in 1991, as imperative and world-changing as they have been, they are but a fleeting blur when placed in contrast to the war declared upon us by Islamic fundamentalism and with respect to our national response. My intent in the next few paragraphs is to relate, in the most succinct way possible, how and why this could well be America’s final war due to the abject, unconscionable failure of our leadership and barring a drastic and comprehensive shift of focus in the prosecution of the war.

History in Brief

On Monday, October 22, 1979 Iranian Supreme-Leader Ayatollah Khomeini declared America to be the “Great Satan” and the “Enemy of Islam.” Thirteen days later, in the early morning of November 4, the war began in earnest with the seizure of sovereign American territory, our Embassy in Tehran and most of its staff and Marine Corps defenders. The war has been waged in fits and spurts of violence ever since. During the 1980s this war raged in Lebanon with repeated attacks on our Beirut Embassy, Marine Barracks bombing, numerous kidnappings, murders and assassinations, in hijacked and bombed commercial aircraft, as well as onboard the civilian cruise ship Achille Lauro in Egyptian territorial waters. This war continued internationally as well as on the soil of the American homeland throughout the 1990s in attacks and military engagements with which we are, or should be, very well familiar with. These actions culminated with the attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York, Washington, D.C., and preemptively by American patriots on-board United 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Declaring War on a Methodology

The response of the American government to the attacks of September 11 was to immediately declare war upon a methodology. Almost instantaneously gone from longstanding American military endeavor were the tried and tested true doctrines of preparing the battlefield and the warfighter for the coming military campaigns. Gone is the ancient and quintessential military imperative to know the enemy, to name the enemy, to study his ideology, tactics and warfighting doctrines, or to identify the ultimate objective of the war. In short, America entered this war against “terrorism” without a comprehensive plan with which to prosecute the war against a specific enemy. In declaring war against the ambiguous ”terrorist” enemy our leaders have effectively decided to engage in operations consisting of massive, unending counter-psychological warfare operations and brute force kinetic warfare against trained yet irregular non-state forces as well as their designated state sponsors. The irregular forces have been devastated by our military; yet their state-sponsors remain untouched with the lone exception of the Ba’athist Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein. The real enemy itself has yet to be identified. That enemy is Islam, its doctrine and its concept of warfare.

The Way Forward

Notwithstanding what this author wrote above, there are several senior military leaders who have performed military due diligence with respect to this enemy. Of the notes and suggested reading list which follows, I strongly recommend a thorough review of all those resources, but particularly those of LTC Myers, MAJ Zimmerman and MAJ Coughlin, and still others which they in turn cite and recommend within their work. Those cited books, essays, articles and theses should form the basis of the requisite American military doctrine to fight this war to a successful and unconditional conclusion, if that were possible. Time will tell if it is, although I have my doubts based upon the previous 6 years of warfare on the battlefield, on our streets, in our malls and in our courts, FISA or otherwise.

The Enemy

Based upon the multiple volumes of material read and researched in preparation for this endeavor, here is an abridged version of those listed below for the Northeast Intelligence Network reader.

To understand the nature of the enemy we must understand his ideology down to its most basic level. In virtually every aspect that ideology is theologically based in the Quran and the Hadith. To date every attempt to educate Americans and the Judeo-Christian West in general about these things has been met with raucous protests from Muslims the world over. Those protests are invariably accompanied by death threats against the infidel, apostate or former-Muslim author. A short list of such individuals would include Salman Rushdie, Wafa Sultan, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Theo van Gogh, and Geert Wilders as the most recent example. The so-called “offense to Islam” perpetrated by the above is to unveil the true face of Islam by citing the same verbatim text of the Quran read by Muslims the world over or preached to them by “rightly guided” Imams during Friday sermons.

Forget about what you hear or read about Islam from the vast majority of Western media, the vast majority of it is as deceptive and disinformative as if it came from Usama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahri, some Iranian Ayatollah or a representative of CAIR on your favorite evening news program.

According to John Clark Mead there are “Cultural Muslims” who have no ill-intent and wish to live in peace for the duration of their lives. They adhere to social norms. The problem arises when “Quranic” or “Fundamentalist Muslims,” (i.e. those Muslims who adhere to specific Quranic ‘revelation’) proselytize them into what is undoubtedly radical, core Islam which seeks nothing less than a global Islamic world order under Shari’a Law. What all Muslim’s have in common is that they self-identify as serving the cause of “Allah.” What the radical “brothers” (al-Ikhwan) do is cite various offenses to Islam and the subsequent requirement of all their fellow true believers to join them in a Jihad for the defense Islam, for the sake of “Allah.” This is true whether the physical location is in the Middle East, Europe, or Main Street, USA. This is in every sense of the phrase a “group mentality” and one of the most basic aspects of Islam. The “group” of Islam is the “Ummah”. In other words from the Islamic prespective, it is “us” (the Ummah) against “them,” “Them” is “us” infidels (kuffar). America, Israel and the West are evil, un-Islamic, and for the sake of the Allah, the creator of the world, we (the ‘kuffar’) must be converted, submitted to their rightful rule or summarily dispatched into the hereafter.

Why 9/11?

Why did 9/11 occur? Two of the sources referenced below cite the reason for 9/11 and several other mass-casualty terrorist attacks very well. The attack was launched for the purpose of Islamic “Strategic Provocation and Retaliation.” Mead refers to this as “SPAR warfare” as does the relatively unheralded thesis of Major Ronald Zimmerman, Jr. The Quranic warfighting doctrine underlying such strategic strikes was to strike terror in our hearts; to strike the symbolic economic and military core of this nation on our home turf in order to precipitate a massive American military retaliation against Muslim lands. The ensuing conventional war would be fought on more or less equal conventional terms. This was Usama bin Laden’s core strategic objective is his calculation that the American military could be drawn into Afghanistan thus affording his Islamic mujahideen the opportunity to repeat the success they achieved against the former-Soviet Union. Just as American forces were on Saudi soil in the 1990’s we were drawn into Islamic land and the “defense of Islam” stratagem could be invoked across the planet, enjoining all Muslims to join the Jihad against the infidel invaders. Is there any wonder why Al Qaeda also invoked this same stratagem in the aftermath of Operation Iraqi Freedom?

North American Ikhwan

As stated above this war is also being fought on our streets, malls, airports, schools, and most recently in our courts – FISA and otherwise. The biggest court battle to date is the U.S. vs. Holy Land Foundation trial. From the federal evidence (cited below) admitted in that trial I think it imperative to inform the American public of the agenda the so-called “moderate” Muslims living among us have been executing for at least the past 20 years. This is completely unambiguous and one-hundred percent definitive of the objective of the Muslim Brotherhood (al-Ikhwan al-Muslimuun) and their brethren, including all un-indicted co-conspirators (such as CAIR, MAS, MSAs, et al.) in the American homeland: (bold for emphasis)

“The process of settlement is a “Civilization-Jihadist Process” with all the word means. The Ikhwan must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and [“Allah’s”] religion is made victorious over all other religions.”

In Conclusion

This author could have written a book on this subject. Many of you are probably thankful I have not. That aside, I wish to pose one final, massive question.

With America now occupied in open warfare in several Islamic countries, and without an official and comprehensive warfighting doctrine against this enemy, much less an identification of his threat doctrine or warfighting strategy, and notwithstanding a public which remains as uninformed, ill-informed or misinformed as to why this war is being fought, where it is being fought, how it is being fought, by whom and what the ultimate objectives are, is there any reason not to realize that this could well be America’s final war?

This is an existential war for the United States of America. We The People ignore it and permit our leadership to ignore it to ‘our great detriment.’
