The assassination of Benazir Bhutto, and the parable of the frog & scorpion

30 December 2007: Since her assassination last week, Western leaders and U.S. presidential hopefuls have been in a posturing frenzy to extol the virtues of the American educated socialite Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan forced into exile following charges of corruption in her government by equally corrupt accusers. Before her flight from power, Bhutto was an illustration of duplicity as detailed in author Steve Coll’s book, Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, most recently cited in an article written by Ken Silverstein, the Washington Editor for Harper’s Magazine. In his article, Silverstein isolated passages from Coll’s book that provides an important insight into Bhutto’s policies and the Clinton administration, illustrating the unsurprising ending of someone who enters into a shell game with the devil.

In his book, Coll points out that Bhutto “had capitulated…to [Pakistani intelligence’s] persistent requests for unlimited covert aid to the Islamic militia.” The more salient portions of Coll’s work cite Bhutto’s duplicity while prime minister of Pakistan, noting that while breaking bread with the Clinton administration in 1995, for example, she was promoting the Taliban “as a pro-Pakistan force that could help stabilize Afghanistan…”

In short, Bhutto continuously and arguably, conspicuously lied to the U.S. administration and Congress about the extent of Pakistani military and financial aid she provided to the Islamic hard-lined Taliban in her capacity of Prime Minister.

Of course, you will not hear any of this in the presidential political arena, nor will it be exposed anywhere by political pundits or the media. They are too busy canonizing Bhutto while ignoring the less comfortable truths about the politics of Islam in a nuclear-armed country that has the religious, social and political stability of a bathtub full of nitroglycerine.

Yet too few still fail to fully understand that when you enter into long-term high stake games with the “house,” the “house” always wins, as does the devil. The house edge is even greater when one considers that in Pakistan, Osama bin Laden currently enjoys a whopping 46% approval rating. In the case of Pakistan, the house is al Qaeda, its operatives, facilitators and imitators, who have successfully infiltrated the highest levels of the government.

Just like the proverbial story of the scorpion and the frog that meet on the bank of a stream, where the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across the water on its back to reach the other side. The frog asks, “How do I know you won’t sting me?” The scorpion says, “Because if I do, I will die too.” The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, but has just enough time to gasp “Why?” The scorpion simply replies, “”What did you expect? Because I’m a scorpion and it’s my nature…”

In the West, there are those in power, those seeking power, the entrenched policymakers, and the media who facilitate them that continue to question or even doubt that al Qaeda, with the able assistance of Pakistani ISI infiltration, is responsible for the murder of Bhutto. To our own peril in the war waged against Israel and the West by Islam, they are continuing to contemplate allowing the scorpion of political Islam to hop on the back of the Western frog for a short swim.

In the run-up for our presidential election, we must hope that our next leader recognizes that a scorpion will always be a scorpion.
