Suspicious package detonated – contained electronics, powder, labeled in Arabic

20 October 2006: A package containing a jar and a red plastic bag, both labeled with Arabic writing, and also containing electronic components and a suspicious black powder was detonated outside of an apartment complex in south Kansas City, Missouri  today. Police were called after a maintenance worker noticed a box lying suspiciously on the sidewalk near the Hilltop Village Apartments about 10 a.m. today. The box was about 12 inches long, 6 inches deep and appeared to be some type of camera case. Kansas City police used a robot to X-ray the box, finding the electronic parts, jar and bag, the black powder and the Arabic writing. The FBI was called to the scene and the police used explosives to blow open the package. Officers in hazardous-material suits took a sample of the powder; the labels were sent to a translator for analysis. Investigation is continuing.
