“Hoax” device found at San Antonio International Airport Sunday afternoon

9 April 2007: It is being described by authorities as a “modified firecracker,” and was found in a bathroom near the baggage claim area at terminal one early Sunday afternoon. One official described the device as being “intentionally placed” where it was found, and looked like a large firecracker with wires exposed and “other items” attached to the device, although this source did not want to describe the item in further detail due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. This official also declined to say whether the item contained explosive material or was inert. Authorities do not know who placed the device, but are now calling it a “hoax.”

Dogs trained to locate explosives searched the area extensively, but no other items were found. Airport operations were only slightly affected and returned to normal by 4:00 p.m. local time.
