Terrorists Hijack Japanese Cargo Ship Full of Benzene

By Sean Osborne, Associate Director, Military Affairs

30 October 2007: The Northeast Intelligence Network has been informed of a report on the Cruise website. That report, dated 28 October 2007, offers some details about what it describes as a “pirate hijacking” of a Japanese cargo ship hauling a load of Benzene.

The Panamanian-registered “Golden Mori” was apparently within 10 nautical miles of the Yemeni island of Socotra, a Gulf of Aden island which in the Cold War era was a Soviet Naval anchorage. I would surmise that this event is no mere pirate hijacking. This is more probably a terrorist event in-progress; a significant and imminent danger to commercial and military ships as well as port facilities in the immediate region.

Reportedly, and as one would expect, ships of the U.S. 5th Fleet did respond, and shots were fired before the U.S. Navy was able to determine the nature of the cargo. This region is within the U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR). Presumably the naval forces of our regional allies and NATO in the area have responded as well. Details as they become available, but there’s more at The NEIN Blog .
