Hate crime literature found on cars in Detroit

30 September 2007: Leaflets found on vehicles in the Detroit area contained messages of hate and urged the murder of those who do not adhere to the Muslim faith:

“Kill Jews and Christians if they don’t believe in Allah and Mohammad.”

According to police reports, the anti-Jewish and anti-Christian fliers were found on cars parked in a lot on the northwest corner of 15 Mile and Ryan roads in Sterling heights, Michigan.

Sterling Heights police Detective Sgt. Paul Jesperson said three separate complaints were filed by residents last week who found the fliers on their windshields. According to Sgt. Jespersen, the flier stated: “Kill Jews and Christians if they don’t believe in Allah and Mohammad,” and further advises people to “Fight those who do not believe.”

According to one media account, Detroit area resident Sam Richardson was shopping at the Kroger store on Tuesday when he saw the flier on his windshield. Asking his 11-year-old daughter to remove it, Richardson said his daughter began crying after she read the flier. He stated he had to explain the flier to his daughter and 7 year-old son who was also with him.

Most notably, no well-financed, large political and religious activist group has filed any hate-crime complaints with the local police department - and there were no press conferences or requests that the placement of these fliers to be treated as a hate crime…
