24 July 2007: Air Force General Victor “Gene” Renuart, the U.S. military commander in charge of defending the U.S. homeland said that he believes there are al-Qaeda cells in the United States and is concerned about an upcoming attack. When interviewed by the Associated Press, Renuart expressed concern about an attack within the U.S., stating, “Am I concerned that this will happen this summer, I have to be concerned that it could happen any day.” Renuart also said that the military needs to create two more brigade-size units, or an additional 7,000 U.S. based troops, to be available to respond to nuclear, chemical and biological incidents inside the United States.
