Farris, the Forgotten: Why We Must Demand Answers

By Douglas J. Hagmann, Director

25 January 2005: Farris HASSAN’S fifteen minutes of fame appear to be over, but troubling questions remain, and no one in the major media seems interested in asking them. To quote a family spokesperson shortly after Farris HASSAN returned from his indirect trip to Iraq, “Farris currently does not wish to address the media.” Perhaps he was expecting to be asked some difficult questions rather than the softball questions he ultimately answered.

The 16 year-old from Florida who made headlines last month for his trip to Iraq has been praised by the very media he misled for surviving his “experiment in immersion journalism,” a reference made to a non-existent school project. By his own admission, Farris HASSAN lied; he lied to his family. He lied to his friends, and he lied to the American public by providing inaccurate statements to the media that continue to remain unchallenged to this day.

For two hours during his truancy, Farris HASSAN met with a leader of a terrorist organization in Beirut, Lebanon – a meeting arranged by family friends, who apparently have the ability to pick up the telephone and call the leaders of Hezbollah, a designated terrorist group that is responsible for at least 200 attacks since 1982 which killed more than 800 people, including Americans. This troubling fact is of very specific importance today as Hezbollah holds close ties with Iran (a spoke in President Bush’s axis of evil and current thorn in the side of world peace and stability) and currently have a significant terrorist presence in Iraq. Hezbollah is resolved to kill our troops and drive us out of the country. Any questions about that meeting, however few, were eclipsed by the more visible elements of his convoluted journey. Regardless, the media’s interest in the activities of Farris HASSAN, even in this time of war, has given way to other human interest stories.

Even if the major media has lost interest in this story, we have some questions for Farris and his father, Dr. Redha HASSAN.

Before we pose these questions, let’s put to rest some of the allegations of inaccuracy we have received regarding our presentation of even the most basic facts of this story. Various media reports suggested that his trip was sparked in part of an immersion journalism class he had taken through his school. We stated that the school he attends, Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida has no immersion journalism class. In our initial report, we received a number of e-mails stating that we were wrong.

To reconfirm what we had already established, yesterday I contacted the spokesperson for Pine Crest School and requested clarification about their “immersion journalism” course. Unsurprisingly, the reports by this agency stating that the Pine Crest School does not offer a journalism class are correct. Referencing the press conference given by school president Dr. Lourdes Cowgill, it was affirmed that the Pine Crest School does NOT offer a journalism class. They do, however, offer an English class, of which a small section of that class covers the subject of “immersion journalism.” That section of the class, however, was taught in September of 2005 and all assignments were due at that time, thus finishing that specific section of the English class.

In a press conference held by Pine Crest School President Dr. Lourdes Cowgill during the first week of January, she clearly stated: “There is no journalism class, and there is no journalism club at Pine Crest,” adding that immersion journalism was only a small portion of an English class Farris took in the fall. The school spokesperson stressed that “the school was in no way involved in the trip made by Farris HASSAN to Iraq.” Any reports suggesting that Farris HASSAN made “a solo trip to Iraq for a journalism project” are absolutely incorrect.

Farris HASSAN originally told reporters at the Associated Press, Baghdad offices, that he was working on a journalism project in immersion journalism. That statement, made by HASSAN, has been proven to be factually incorrect. Farris lied.

Next, in an essay accredited to Farris HASSAN, he stated the following about his journey:

“I plan on doing humanitarian work with the Red Cross. I will give my mind, body, and spirit to helping Iraqis rebuild their lives. Hopefully I will get the chance to build houses, distribute food supplies, and bring a smile or two to some poor children.” How he planned on accomplishing such lofty goals despite the brevity of his stay are unclear, especially since he was busy meeting with one of the leaders of a terrorist organization – a meeting arranged by family friends. That begs the obvious question: who are his family friends who have such connections to a terrorist organization? Also, exactly what was the purpose of this meeting, and what was discussed for two hours?

Speaking of family, Farris was quite cagey and indeed, very misleading when answering media questions about his father’s knowledge about his trip. It turns out that his father, Dr. Redha Hassan not only knew of his son’s intended travels, but assisted him along his journey. This would not be so troubling were it not for the fact that Dr. Redha HASSAN, along with two of the younger HASSAN’S uncles and a pro-Khomeini, pro-Iranian activist were arrested by the FBI in Florida in 1985 for forging 2000 Iraqi passports and military I.D. cards and seeking to forge 2,000 more. The case against the elder HASSAN – or as he was known in certain circles - Redha K. ALSAWAF, was ultimately dropped, but his compatriots pled guilty.

All things considered, is it possible that Farris HASSAN was driven not by his desire to experience the plight of the Iraqi people himself, but perhaps to join Hezbollah to fight against the “American occupation?”

Is it possible that Farris HASSAN was, in fact, traveling at the behest of his father, to advance some other agenda?

Has Farris HASSAN been interviewed and debriefed by anyone in our intelligence agencies?

What is the connection between HASSAN’S family in America and their family friends who arranged the meeting with the Hezbollah leader?

Dr. Redha HASSAN, his son and other family members live in the United States. The elder HASSAN as well as his son has obviously been in contact with their friends who apparently enjoy a high degree of access to the leadership of a designated terrorist organization. Shouldn’t the media address that situation, instead of focusing on whether Farris will be allowed to drive his $50,000 car or have access to his credit cards taken away?

Let’s demand answers. The safety of our country just might depend on it.

Reality Check to Those Suffering from Terror Fatigue

By Randy Taylor, Senior Independent Analyst
rtaylor@homelandsecurityus.com

8 January 2005: I was looking through some of the hundreds of emails that come to my inbox daily this morning and was reminded just how serious the threat of terrorism is on this very day. Allow me to share just a couple of the headlines and some of my comments with you:

* Briton is accused of missile plot in US- A British businessman stands accused of offering to sell an undercover FBI agent 200 shoulder-fired missiles. Told the agent that they could be used to bring down multiple aircraft on the anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Pretty well documented case for the US Government. Gee, I wonder what a Middle Eastern fellow in the US would need with missiles?

* Evidence found in Iraq leads investigators to an Albany, New York mosque- Last summer US troops in Iraq discovered the name of Yassin Muhhiddin Aref, telephone number and US address in a book left behind by insurgents in a make-shift terrorist training camp. Aref, the Imam of the Masjid As-Salam mosque in Albany and Mohammed Mosharref Hossain, the 49-year-old founder of the mosque and owner of the local Little Italy Pizzeria were arrested and charged with helping an undercover informant posing as a weapons dealer who was wanting to to buy shoulder fired missiles that would be used to kill the Pakistani ambassador in New York City. Good chance Americans would have died along with the Ambassador, don’t you think?

* US Authorities seek man attempting to buy large quantities of fertilizer- Federal authorities are looking for a middle eastern man using bogus construction credentials trying to purchase 500 to 1000 metric tons of the fertilizer chemical ammonium nitrate which is exactly the same materials used in the Oklahoma City bombing. The incident was reported by a company in Canada to US authorities. This fellow must have a very large yard to fertilize?

* Islamic Army in Iraq threatens attacks in US- The Islamic Army in Iraq, one of the main armed insurgent-terrorist groups in that country fighting against our forces has openly stated on an Islamic website that they “will bring woes on America. The mujahedeen (holy warriors) have prepared big surprises for your sons outside America and a big surprise for you in America,” according to reports. Hmmm. Idle threats perhaps, but it seems that we received intelligence prior to 9-11 that many thought were idle threats.

I personally, as well as other analysts and researchers of Northeast Intelligence Network receive an enormous number of emails from idiots worldwide with their conspiracy theories and accusations on how the US really isn’t a target for terrorists and how the Bush administration simply uses the terrorist threat to further their agenda overseas as well as domestically. I’m the first to admit that I don’t have all the answers but be assured of this simple truth: Anyone who wants to smuggle or buy 200 shoulder fired missiles for use in America isn’t using them for deer hunting. We also seem to be missing two rather large buildings in the New York skyline that I know were last seen untouched and standing tall early on a sunshine filled morning in 2001. We also are missing four airplanes full of passengers. There are also a number of incidents that have happened inside the United States that the general public really doesn’t know about, or all the facts concerning such incidents were not relayed to the public in a manner that would indicate the true motive of terrorism behind the incident. Research into the facts beyond the mainstream media reports often leaves no doubt whatsoever what the true nature and intent of the incident was.

It seems anymore that I am seeing Osama Bin Laden or one of his henchmen about as much lately as the “Leave it to Beaver” reruns that grace my television screen and in light of this, I think it is still a pretty safe bet that we are a prime terrorist target and the nightmare isn’t a dream, it is for real.

It is coming to a town near you.

Be safe, stay vigilant.

North American Aircraft Are Under Attack By High-Powered Lasers

By Sean Osborne, Associate Director, Military Affairs Specialist

3 January 2005: Last Monday a high-powered laser weapon was intentionally directed into the cockpit of a Continental Airlines flight for several seconds while approaching the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The aircraft was still at an altitude of 8,500 feet. The laser was determined to have been fired from a residential area in suburban Warrensville Heights.

The disturbing thing about this attack is that it is not an isolated incident, but rather it is a new terrorist tactic, the tactical goal of which is to bring down commercial aircraft by literally blinding the pilots. The FBI and the US Department of Homeland Security recently issued an official memo warning of exactly this intent. The memo read in part:

“Although lasers are not proven methods of attack like improvised explosive devices and hijackings, terrorist groups overseas have expressed interest in using these devices against human sight. In certain circumstances, if laser weapons adversely affect the eyesight of both pilot and co-pilot during a non-instrument approach, there is a risk of airliner crash.”

Well, I am here to tell you that these terrorists are not entirely “overseas,” they are right here in the USA and they can strike at any commercial airport in the United States and Canada. Back in 1997 the first reported incident occurred when a US Navy officer received eye injuries as the Royal Canadian helicopter he was in was fired on by a laser from a Russian trawler (i.e.: spy ship) in the Puget Sound of Washington State. More recently in April 2004 two Royal Canadian helicopter pilots were illuminated by a laser also fired from a Russian trawler. And that’s just for starters. According to Bill Gertz of The Washington Times, on September 28, 2004 a Delta Airlines commercial flight had one of its pilots suffering from acute eye injury when a laser targeted the cockpit as the plane approached the Salt Lake City airport in Utah.

According to the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System there are records of this kind of attack for the last two years against commercial flights within the continental United States as aircraft approached or departed the international airports of Honolulu, Las Vegas, Miami, New York City, Los Angeles and Phoenix. In one such incident at LAX both the pilot and the co-pilot of a 737 on departure were hit by a 5 to 10 second laser blast and suffered burns to their eyes and broken blood vessels. An aircraft at Phoenix had one crewman blinded for an hour and a half after being hit by a laser strike.

Finally, according to the United States National Air Intelligence Center over 50 such incidents of aircraft operating in North American skies have been subjected to powerful laser attacks within the past year or two. North American aircraft and pilots are under attack. Now you know the truth. If you’re a frequent flyer, now you know why more and more pilots are wearing mirrored sunglasses.

Airplanes & Airports still high on “Terrorist Wish List”

By Randy Taylor, Independent Analyst

1 January 2005:  There has been much scuttlebutt and many rumors flying around about terrorists still planning to target airports, airplanes and passengers. A report surfacing earlier this month in the Spanish Press indicates that the State Security forces in Valencia, Spain have been on extremely high alert status after the British Secret Service passed along a report that there are currently nine suspected terrorists from North America who plan to board an airliner and use electronic immobilizers to commit a terrorist act sometime before, during or after the Christmas and New Year Holidays. It was reported that their most likely target for this terrorist act will be either inside of the United States or the United Kingdom. Originally the terrorist cell had thirteen members dedicated to this plot.
