Tuesday’s terror arrest in UK might have U.S. connection

28 February 2007: Police officials in the UK conducted raided a residence in Waltham Forest yesterday morning and arrested a 27 year-old Muslim man on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Police searched his residence, as well as a related business in Camden in connection with an ongoing terrorism investigation. The man was taken to a central London police station where he remains in custody.

According to information developed by the Northeast Intelligence Network, the arrest stems from the ongoing and far reaching investigation into a 2006 plot to commandeer airliners originating in the UK and crash them into targets inside the US. Additional information will be provided as it is developed.

US VP Cheney targeted in Taliban attack at Bagram base in Afghanistan

27 February 2007: A “suicide bomber” attacked the Bagram Airforce base Monday while US VP Dick Cheney was present, reportedly killing 10 people, including at least one US soldier. The Vice President, however, protected by layers of security already in place at the base, was not affected or hurt in the blast. According to Taliban spokesman Mullah Hayat KHAN, the bomber knew the Vice President was present at the base and was targeting him specifically. Previous open-source reports also cite a purported Taliban spokesman identified as Qari Mohammad Yousef AHMADI claiming that the bomber was Abdul RAHIM, an Afghan national from Logar province.

Based on an analysis of several reports, the attacker attempted entry into the base; failing that, he set off his bomb between the main gate and a securityy checkpoint beyond the primary gate. About an hour before the attack, Cheney met with US soldiers stationed at the base and had breakfast with them.

Anthrax, bomb scare at Missouri University

27 February 2007: Shortly after 2:30 this morning, a “distraught” knife-wielding foreign graduate student enrolled at the University of Missouri-Rolla campus claimed to have anthrax and said he planted a bomb at the school’s civil engineering building. When the man refused to drop the knife, a university police officer shot him with a stun gun and took him into custody. At that time, police found a four-page note in which the student threatened to destroy the building, and a paper bag in which the student claimed to have anthrax. The substance was tested and later determined to be simple table sugar, but not before 23 people, including eight students, a faculty member and the emergency workers who responded to the call were quarantined.

As police searched the school for the bomb, the 5,850-student technological research and engineering campus and a nearby Catholic grade school were closed for the day due to the incident. Although the identity of the student and his country of origin was purposely withheld, criminal charges are expected to be filed by Wednesday. The Northeast Intelligence Network is closely following this incident.

February 26, 1993: 14th anniversary of World Trade Center bombing

26 February 2007: Today marks the 14th anniversary of the Islamic terrorist bombing at the World Trade Center that killed 6 people and injured another 1,042 people. The attack was planned and executed by Islamic terrorists that included Ramzi Yousef, Shaykh Omar Abdel-Rahman, El Sayyid Nosair, Mahmud Abu Halima, Muhammad Salameh, Nidal Ayyad, Ahmad Ajaj, and Abdul Rahman Yasin, and was financed by al-Qaeda leader Khaled Shaikh Mohammed, who is also Yousef’s uncle.

The bomb, transported to the B-2 level of the north tower’s parking garage, was made of 1200 pounds of urea nitrate with a nitroglycerine triggger, exploding at 12:17 p.m. The bomb also contained several other components to make it more deadly: magnesium, ferric oxide, three cannisters of hydrogen gas, and sodium cyanide. The bombers had hoped to collapse the north tower into the south tower, and kill upwards of 250,000 people through the actual bomb and the subsequent release of cyanide gas. The cyanide, however, burned rather than becomming vaporized in the blast.

In October 1995, Islamic terrorist Omar Abdel-Rahman (known as the blind shaykh), was sentenced to life imprisonment for masterminding the bombing. In 1998, Ramzi Yousef was convicted of “seditious conspiracy” to bomb the towers.

Theft of radioactive device in Canada cause for concern

25 February 2007: Sometime on or shortly before Tuesday, February 20, 2007, a portable radioactive nucleodensimeter was stolen from a construction site in Vaudreuil-Dorion, outside of Montreal. Weighing about 75 pounds, the specialized device is clearly labeled with radioactive warning stickers and contains radioactive material used to take soil samples and measure ground water. The radioactive substance inside, however, can be potentially dangerous if improperly exposed – or used for nefarious purposes.Second theft in the same area

This is the second time a nucleodensimeter has been stolen from the greater Montreal area. On September 23, 2002, the same type of device was stolen from an engineer’s truck while the vehicle was parked at his residence in Laval, Canada, just outside of Montreal. Based on inquiries to police officials by the Northeast Intelligence Network, that device was never recovered.

There is a growing level of concern among police officials that the radioactive material contained in these devices, in part, could be used in the construction of a “dirty bomb,” where radioactive products are mixed with explosives, thus creating a radiological dispersal device that could spread radiation over a large area.

Police and other officials are continuing their investigation and their search for the missing device.

Source of mysterious explosion in Illinois sought

24 February 2007: Police from at least three municipalities searched for the source of a loud explosion heard in and around McHenry, IL, located about 15 miles south of the Illinois-Wisconsin state line and about 20 miles west of I-94 at about 8:30 p.m. Friday evening. Residents in the area of McHenry heard a large explosion - strong enough to shake houses in the area, and at least one resident observed a plume of smoke in the distance, but police from three departments failed to find anything after a search of the area. Police from McHenry, Johnsburg and McCullom Lake helped in the search.

Intelligence report: Islamic terror threat in UK greatest since 9/11

“al-Qaeda’s influence extends from North Africa, including Egypt, through to Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan, and into Somalia and Sudan. Al-Qaeda is ‘resilient and effective’ in Iraq, its ‘operating environment and financial position’ in Pakistan has improved and a new group had emerged in Yemen.”

24 February 2007: An intelligence report outlining the terrorist threat in Great Britain, titled “Extremist Threat Assessment,” concludes that the terrorist threat facing the UK from Islamic terrorists is higher than at any time since September 11. According to the report, the number of British-based Islamic terrorists planning homicide attacks “could number more than 2,000.” MI5, Great Britain’s intelligence organization, identifies “soft targets,” such as mass transit and economic targets, such as the City of London and Canary Wharf, are most at risk.

Analysis: Weapons seized in US-Mexican border town suggest large-scale operation

By Sean Osborne, Associate Director, Military Affairs

25 February 2007: Over the past couple of days, I have analyzed additional imagery and data associated with the report of a large cache of weapons and other military supplies seized in Tamaulipas, Mexico across from Brownsville, Texas.  Contrary to various public assessments, my analysis suggests that these weapons were not intended for an assault of one Mexican narco-gang against a rival gang within the territory of Mexico, but were intended for a larger and more specific operation within the United States.

My analysis involved additional images other than what is shown below, and noted that there were a total of three civilian up-armored vehicles with bullet-proof glass seized in this shipment. The assault weapons and ammunition seized was sufficient to equip 3 six-man squads of a special operations capable strike force, with at least 400 rounds per man. The rifle and handgun ammunition consisted of armor-piercing, tracer and hollow point rounds; the M203 grenade launcher ammunition was primarily of the fragmentary type along with one armor-piercing round. This force is assessed to be comprised of former Mexican Army troops known as Zetas in addition to Islamic terrorist operatives.

The potential targets of this force range from an outrageous and unprecedented raid to liberate the Mexican Gulf Cartel narco-boss, Osiel Cardenas GUILLEN, currently being held for trial in Houston, Texas to other possibilities such as an assault on a state legislature or a similar body in Texas or elsewhere within the U.S. One other possibility includes the execution of a very large “false-flag” operation. This assessment continues as new information is being developed.

The types, the quantities, and the nature of the various weapons and ammunition seized, in addition to the other miscellaneous military equipment and vehicles are assessed to be directly related to a special operations-like assault of significant magnitude somewhere in the USA rather than utilization in a narco-gang war in Mexico. It is obvious that a large-scale operation was set to be executed in the very near term. Additional analysis and investigation is continuing.

CRITICAL UPDATE: 1 MARCH 2007 (UPDATE 2 OF 2)By Doug Hagmann, Director, and Sean Osborne, Associate Director, Military Affairs

Additional analysis of weapons seizure: Intelligence obtained by the Northeast Intelligence Network suggests that the weapons seized at the Mexican-U.S. border could be used to launch an attack against U.S. military bases, especially those situated in the southwestern United States. Information obtained from military and intelligence sources indicate that military assets within the U.S. are at increased risk of attack by Islamic terrorists already present with the U.S., having entered the country illegally via the border with Mexico. Our investigation is continuing.
