Israel reacts to Hezbollah provocation

By Sean Osborne, Associate Director, Military Affairs

7 February 2007: In the most recent series of provocations, Hezbollah terrorists have been moving from southern Lebanon into northern Israel opposite Moshav Avivim over the last several days, planting anti-tank and anti-personnel mines into sovereign Israeli territory. Israel, meanwhile, has advised Lebanon of its intentions to clear the mines from their territory with bulldozers supported by IDF forces, warning that they would return fire if fired upon by the Lebanese army.

At approximately 10:00 PM local time, the bulldozers began clearing the area, at which time were engaged by Lebanese forces. Hezbollah, meanwhile, is making preparations to engage Israeli forces in the same region. Reports to the Northeast Intelligence Network stated that firefights between Israeli IDF forces and the Lebanese military are taking place at this hour.
