Criticize Islam, risk “slaughter”

23 March 2007: The present leader of the liberal Muslim Canadian Congress (MCC)and its founder, both who have openly criticized the politicization of Islam and the influence of fundamentalist clerics on most Canadian mosques and their congregations, have been threatened with “slaughter” unless they stop speaking publicly about Islam.

Farzana Hassan-Shahed the current head of MCC, and Tarek Fatah, its founder, both of Pakistani origin, were threatened by an anonymous phone caller who warned that its members must “cease from your campaign of smearing Islam” or “I will slaughter you”. The message mentioned Tarek Fatah and Farzana Hassan-Shahid by name. An investigation by the Toronto Police is underway.

Toronto police have launched a hate crime investigation into the phone call from a person who vowed to “slaughter” MCC members unless they stop speaking publicly about Islam.
