One Dead, 7 Injured in Tennessee Church Shooting

One woman was shot dead and seven others were injured after a shooting suspect, identified as 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson, opened fire at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, Tennessee today.

Samson, originally from Karthoum, Sudan fired “multiple rounds” before being stopped by a church usher. The usher, identified as Robert Engle, 22, confronted the masked gunman and was pistol-whipped. At some point during the confrontation, Samson’s weapon discharged, causing him to shoot himself, although not seriously.

Despite suffering from significant head injuries from the confrontation, Mr. Engle made it to his own vehicle where he used kept his pistol and returned inside the church. He held the gunman at gunpoint until police arrived.

The suspect is being charged with one count of murder and several counts of attempted murder. According to police, the suspect is a legal US resident, arriving from Sudan in the 1990’s.
